Biography

Jerry Klepner came to photography late in life. He has spent his career working for social change in the government relations and political arenas, focusing on health care and human services.

He first took an interest in photography nearly two decades ago, using a Nikon point and shoot camera on a trip to England and Scotland. He soon upgraded his equipment and enrolled in the Maine Media Workshops where he studied composition and darkroom techniques. He became a devotee of the darkroom at the Reston Community Center

where he sharpened his skills in black and white developing and printing. Mr. Klepner has also taken courses at the Northern Virginia Community College and the McLean Community Center. He now uses digital as well as film and is focusing his work on landscapes and seascapes. His cameras of choice are the Nikon F-100 and the D200. He also has fun with his plastic Holga.

His work has been shown at galleries in Maine and in the Northern Virginia area.

Artist Statement

Looking through the lens of my Nikon D 200, F 100 or Holga I see the world differently.  My eye focuses on patterns in nature, the interplay of light and dark, colors, shadows or the small slices of life that I overlook in my daily pursuits.  What I tend to ignore as I rush through the day I seek to capture in my photography.  A refuge from the day’s demands.  In a world filled with deadlines, pressure and stress, I strive, through my images, to create an oasis of calm and serenity.  To capture our bond with nature’s beauty. To find tranquility in dawn’s mist. To reflect on the majesty of storm clouds caressing

a mountain top.  To be mesmerized by sunbeams dancing like diamonds across the waves or the brilliance of day’s end.  Something familiar, something imagined, something awesome, something whimsical.  My hope is that my images evoke a sense of reflection of past moments of peace and joy or simply bring forth a smile or the momentary realization of a fantasy.  None of my photographs are titled.  Nor do they indicate location, date, or time of day.  They can take you wherever you like whenever you like.  Let your imagination be your only guide.
